Ever the rage during the 1800s, this Italian micro mosaic of a scarab beetle sends echoes from the time of pharaohs and pyramids. Fascinated by all things Egyptian and exotic, the Victorians often held soirees to unveil, well actually unwrap, the most recently acquired mummy. It was certainly no stretch of the imagination for jewelers of the times to incorporate motifs from ancient periods, such as this example of an Egyptian archaeological revival brooch. ca 1860-70
